Prof. Friday N. Ndubuisi, currently a professor of Philosophy at the University of Lagos, has been appointed the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State, one of the new private universities recently approved by the Federal Government. In this interview with Editorial Page Editor, CALLISTUS OKE and Assistant Editor, Health and Education, SAM EFERARO, Professor Ndubuisi says the core value of the new university will be the promotion of excellence, which is geared towards producing first-class graduates that will be counted among the best in the world. Excerpts:

Thank you for having us. Let’s start by asking what Christopher University is all about.
Christopher University is among the last set of private universities approved by the Federal Government to operate. Since then, we have put a number of things in place to ensure that the university takes off effectively this academic session. By the way, Christopher University is under the mentorship of the University of Lagos. It is located in Mowe, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, about a minute or two from the Redeemed Camp. We already have structures in place. We have the administrative block, classrooms, students’ hostels, and playgrounds. The university is also up-to-date in information technology. So, I can say the university is now fully on the ground. As a matter of fact, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has given us students for take-off in the 2015/2016 session. In that light, I was appointed the pioneer Vice-Chancellor; a Registrar has also been appointed. We are in the process of recruiting academic and non-academic staff.

PROMOTION OF THE VIRTUES OF SCHOLARSHIP
The Christopher University Management harps seriously on sterling qualities such as discretion, caution, frugality, liberality or freedom of mind, good sense of judgment, honesty, courage, fidelity, diligence, enterprise, industry, prudence, temperance, sobriety, patience, constancy, perseverance, forethought, consideration, cheerfulness, and philosophical tranquility. The Council and Management of the Christopher University place a high premium on leadership and entrepreneurial training. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF ASSET MANAGEMENT
Work is currently going on to establish the Institute of Asset Management. When completed, the institute will be the first of its kind in the country. Christopher University offers Direct Entry admission to candidates with the requisite qualifications.

COURSES AVAILABLE BY DIRECT ENTRY ADMISSION
The following courses are available for Direct Entry admission into Christopher University.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The general entry requirements for admission into the First Degree by Direct Entry are as follows:

1. A minimum of five (5) GCE/WASCE credits at not more than two sittings with at least two Principal or Advanced level G.C.E. and the others.
2. Two passes at the IJMB Advanced Level Examination, Cambridge moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examination, JUPEB with SSCE/GCE, NTS/NBC credits equivalent in three other subjects.
3. Passes in two major subjects in the NCE with S.S.C.E., NTC/NBC credits or equivalents in THREE other subjects.
4. Minimum of lower credit grade in National Diploma or National Innovation Diploma including the O’Level requirements.

DIRECT ENTRY REGISTRATION GUIDE (AS STATED ON THE JAMB WEBSITE WWW.JAMB.ORG.NG) Registration fee for the 2017 Direct Entry is Five Thousand Naira (N5,000). Candidates should note that e-PINS being purchased are tied to individual profile and are not transferable.
Below are the following steps on how to register for direct entry;

• Create an account on the JAMB platform www.jamb.org.ng (You do not need to create account if you already have one)
• Upon account creation, print the confirmation mail and take it to the bank for payment(PIN vending)
• Continue registration by supplying the vended PIN on the mobile application or the JAMB Registration Application at CBT centre
• Complete other required information via the mobile application or the JAMB Registration Application at CBT centre
• Proceed to the nearest CBT centre to capture passport and fingerprints (this can only be done at the CBT centre)
• Note: You can print Direct Entry Pre-payment slip if you have account already (this is a tender for your bank payment)
• Login to your dashboard and click Direct Entry Registration to print the Pre-payment Slip.

Graduates of Nigerian universities have been charged to rise up to the occasion and play the critical roles expected of them, in ensuring the country’s sustainable socio-economic development.

Vice Chancellor of Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State, Professor, Friday Ndubuisi, who gave the charge while playing host to a delegation of Anambra State Women Association (ANSWAL), Lagos State, who was in his office on a courtesy visit pointed out that different areas of the country’s national life have grown in complexity, hence university graduates should deploy their intellectual sophistication to forge ahead.

Ndubuisi, a professor of philosophy noted that it was imperative for universities to design quality programmes aimed at inculcating profound academic, vocational, and other abilities in their products.

“Products of the university system cannot shy away from being in the lead in efforts to take Nigeria to the next level. This is why each university should endeavour to produce quality graduates,” Ndubuisi stated.

The vice chancellor, who is also a legal practitioner assured that Christopher University, would produce graduates that would also double as also creators of wealth, as according to him, the school would, while preparing students for their degree examinations, help them sit and clear the different professional examinations before graduation

The Vice-Chancellor, Christopher University, Ogun State, Prof. Friday Ndubuisi, speaks about why research in higher institutions of learning is still at low ebb in this interview with FOLASHADE ADEBAYO

What are the challenges the new university is facing?
The challenges include being acclimatised to the environment and building confidence in parents and guardians. We also want to ensure that our facilities are up to date and ready for takeoff. Parents and guardians want to inspect our facilities and they are right about that. They want to put their children in the best of universities with adequate security.  We have also been concerned about getting the right scholars, not just people who are looking for jobs.  You must have either a PhD or be a registered PhD student.

Your university seems to be an appendage of the University of Lagos. Why is this so?
That is not the case at all. We are under the mentorship of the University of Lagos, which is an official directive from the National Universities Commission. The NUC has devised a means to put new universities under the mentorship of old ones. University of London mentored the University of Ibadan. News universities are supposed to have affiliation to older ones. UNILAG is to be involved in the appointment of our governing council and the recruitment of our principal officers.   The mentorship started last year and we are taking off this September. UNILAG is to be involved during the commencement of any academic programme in our university in terms of quality assurance, among other things. Already, the UNILAG VC has set up a committee that has the deputy vice-chancellor, academics and research, as the chair.

What is your take on the proliferation of private universities in the country in which some have been described as mushroom universities?

I want to believe that they mean proliferation by referring to the number of private universities springing up these days in the country. And, if I may ask how, many do we have compared to our population? The entire universities in Nigeria are still less than 170, accommodating less than half of the admission seekers.

And without the private universities, how many would the federal and state universities have accommodated? I was in the University of Lagos for many years and I know what we went through in terms of admission processes. Last year alone, about 33,000 candidates sat for the Post-UTME at the university and less than 7,000 were eventually offered admission.
