Philosophy of the Law Program

The Vision of Christopher University, Mowe is to be: a world renowned Entrepreneurial University committed to teaching and research on the basis of University-Government-Industry partnerships and dedicated to excellent service through innovative application of knowledge and skills. Within this broad philosophy, the proposed Law programme will be based on the social context of rules of law, and it must be researched, taught and engaged with the perspectives of a better and functional society. Hence, the Law programme will seek to train lawyers not only in the ‘letters’ but also in the ‘spirit’ of the words so as to afford graduates of Law utilize both (letters and spirit) in transforming the social, political, economic and cultural space of any given society. Our trajectory and mandate as teachers and professional lawyers will be to extend its relevance and be a leading light on pressing issues in every part of the country and the globe. Ultimately, the Law programme will be packaged to produce lawyers that are grounded in the ethics of the profession and imbued with relevant socio-legal skills required for servicing the society as legal practitioners, academics, legal advisers, jurists, civil society advocates and lawyers in government establishments, leaders in the corporate, as well as political worlds.

 

Societies are built on the rule of Law. Therefore, it is imperative that our Legal Education must be robust, and up-to-date, in the deployment of modern tools and technologies, so as to enhance its delivery for public good, and sustain its relevance. The Law programme is designed to produce first rate and self-reliant graduates who are innovative and efficient in various aspects of Legal practice and administration. The graduates will be professionally groomed to positively impact the society through selfless service, professionalism and excellence.

 

The curriculum as designed includes critical analysis and examination of contemporary political, economic, environmental and social issues. The teaching and learning of Law will be in accordance with required standards. It will try to resolve various contemporary challenges facing the nation, Africa, and the rest of the world from a legal perspective. Our Law programme is designed to produce graduates who are competent and independent, and can serve in various capacities, locally and internationally. Furthermore, the School of Law will produce students that are globally competitive as well as employing inter-disciplinary approach to problem solving.

Objectives of the Programme

 

The Law programme of Christopher University, Mowe is designed to achieve the following aims and objectives:

  1. To ensure that students acquire requisite basic knowledge in Law and Jurisprudence, and as well as, the requisite technical/professional and social skills required to adapt their future Law practices within a dynamic and changing society.
  2. To train students on the practical application and deployment of legal knowledge on how they would use their knowledge of the law to respond to the diverse needs of stakeholders including governments, businesses, communities, families, individual and industries.
  3. To sufficiently equip students in the basic knowledge of Law, and its applications, professionalism and relevant competencies in order to build them for higher degrees and challenges, as well as for future higher callings in legal practice within and outside of the country.
  4. To expose students to sufficient basic legal knowledge and technical/professional skills to become successful private legal practitioners, academics, legal advisers and civil society advocates, lawyers in government establishments, leaders in the corporate and political worlds.
  5. To impart in students the right professional values and ethical responsibilities to enhance the right set of character, inter-personal skills required to develop society, including, self-confidence, honesty, humility, trustworthiness, hard work, networking, team-spirit, conviviality, as well as, traits for leadership.
  6. To make students adopt comparative approach to legal studies bearing in mind the different systems of Law in Nigeria (Common Law, Customary Law and Islamic Law).

Programme Objectives:

 

  1. To promote Legal education and research for innovation and for excellent jurisprudence.
  2. To be a first rate School of Law committed to sound Legal Education in Nigeria and Africa.
  3. To impart students with a sound understanding of the principles and foundation of Legal Education and practice.
  4. To provide students with a broad base of subjects in the Arts and Humanities and Social and Management Sciences, Philosophy and Basic and Pure Sciences, and as well as, courses that cover a wide scope of Legal education.
  5. To develop and nurture the analytical skills, advocacy, research and other Legal skills in students thereby preparing them for a world of advocacy and legal services.

Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree

 

The School of Law offers admission to candidates through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the Direct Entry.

A. By University Matriculation Entry Mode (UME): The minimum entry requirements for admission for candidates seeking admission into the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme are as follows:

 

  1. West African Secondary School Certificate with credit passes in five (5) subjects, including Mathematics, English Language and Literature in English (and any 2 (two) Social Science or Art subjects) obtained at not more than two sittings; or
  2. G.C.E. ‘O’ Level Certificate with credit passes in five (5) subjects, including Mathematics, English Language and Literature in English (and any 2 (two) Social Science or Art subjects) obtained at not more than two sittings; or
  3. Senior Secondary School Certificate (S.S.S.C)with credit passes in five (5) subjects, including Mathematics, English Language and Literature in English (and any 2 (two) Social Science or Art subjects) obtained at not more than two sittings; or
  4. National Examination Council (NECO) Certificate with credit passes in five (5) subjects, including Mathematics, English Language and Literature in English (and any 2 (two) Social Science or Art subjects) obtained at not more than two sittings.

Additionally, an eligible candidate must also have achieved an acceptable pass in the Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) and other relevant entry test/examination (if any).

 

B. Through Direct Entry Mode: Candidates must possess:

 

 

  1. Candidates with A’ level credit pass or its equivalent in relevant subjects must apply in the relevant year to the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board as Direct Entry candidate.
  2. Additionally, in line with the NUC BMAS for LLB programmes in Law Faculties in Nigerian Universities and Christopher University, Mowe admission requirements for the proposed Law programme, as stated above; or
    Additionally, a first degree from a recognized University with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) Honours, may be considered in line with the NUC BMAS for LLB programmes in Law Faculties in Nigerian Universities and Christopher University admission requirements for Law programme. Equally, eligible candidates must satisfy the O’Level requirements as candidates seeking admission through the University Matriculation Entry Mode, as stated above.

Duration of Programme

 

The LLBprogrammetakes a minimum of five (5) years, that is, ten (10) semesters for candidates admitted through the UMTE and four (4) years, that is, eight (8) semesters for Direct Entry candidates.
